Category option grayed out again

Something is going on with our categories. When starting a new discussion, they are greyed out so it's not possible to select where you want to put the discussion.

It was doing this a while ago but Lincoln did something to fix it.

Yes, in the Dashboard under Categories there is a checkbox: "Display root categories as headings." Do not check that box :) I've unchecked it again.
