  • Hi @fjlee, it's not possible to update custom themes onto the hosted service. What we allow is the customization of the HTML template and CSS for your site via the "Customize Theme" option.

If you wanted, you could copy/paste this from a compatible theme. However, be sure to preview any changes before applying them.

We don't allow full themes to be uploaded because many theme authors go too far in their customizations which could cause conflicts and problems as we add new features to Vanilla.
  • Most of the compatible themes contain more than just html and css. So, those are possible? Or is there a place to upload some images, files, etc.?
  • Hi @jennjohnson I'm not sure I follow what you mean by "compatible themes." Do you need assistance hosting images for your theme customizations? Generally when a theme is complex enough to require additional assets, the assets already exist on the client's main website.
  • Hiya. Sorry I wasn't clear. Let me take a step back.

fjlee asked, "How do you upload a new theme in the hosted version of Vanilla.com?"

You answered, "Hi @fjlee, it's not possible to update custom themes onto the hosted service. I wasn't exactly sure what you meant by compatible themes, but assumed you meant more than the 4 or 5 that seem to come with a vanilla.com account, since the original question was about uploading new themes.

So I looked up themes here: http://vanillaforums.org/addon/browse/themes/popular/2/

When I downloaded the theme files from a few of them....

    http://vanillaforums.org/addon/vanillapress2010-theme
    http://vanillaforums.org/addon/559-rounder
    http://vanillaforums.org/addon/timely-theme
    (for example)

to check out the HTML/CSS that we might copy over as your note seemed to suggest, I noticed that they came with design files that had images (like arrows, buttons, corners, etc). So, copying and pasting HTML/CSS from these wouldn't work unless we could also add the image folder somewhere.

    That's what my question meant.

@jennjohnson that's right. You'd have to upload those images to your main website and update the HTML/CSS to point to the images at that location.
