Hi,

I have hit the limit of 5 tags per post in my forum (gatk hosted at vanilla) and this number is way too small for our needs. I couldn't find any setting to change this limit. Is there a simple way to do this that I am missing?

thank you,

  • Sure, what would you like the maximum to be on your site?

No limit would be nice, but if that's not feasible any reasonably large number like 500 would be good.

We use tags to relate to tools and generate automatic documentation.

    Thank you!
  • To increase the limit by that much, we'll need to make some more significant alterations. I'll update you as soon as that's ready.

Also keep in mind that 500 tags is a lot and we don't really know the repercussions of having so many tags on a discussion.
  • what is a reasonably high number?

Until now, we've never had a site use more than 10 or 20, so, as Todd indicated, we're not sure. I'll increase the capacity and you can try it out.
  • We are happy to explore the consequences of using a higher number. Maybe 30 would be enough.
  • Hey @Carneiro, I just want to verify how you're using tags. Are you sure that a simple search wouldn't be more useful? We haven't heard of anyone using more than a dozen tags on a particular discussion. To be clear, there is no limit to the total number of tags you can create overall. The limit is only on how many can be applied to a single discussion.

I've increased your maximum to 30 tags. However, there's a secondary limitation: all tags on the discussion cannot exceed ~240 characters total. That means you're limited to 8 characters per tag on average if you use that many. This is the limit that would require the additional modifications on our part.
  • We have a tag for each tool in our toolkit.

Every time we write a tutorial that shows uses of multiple tools in the toolkit, this tutorial must be tagged with all the tools in the toolkit, so that it appears automatically in the toolkit webpage for each one of the tools.

30/240 is probably fine by now. I'll let you know if we need more.
  • OK, sounds good.
