Hello, some members have said that they are having trouble logging in (by username/password input) - system would not accept their credentials. Can you please take a look?

Comments

  • We're going to need more information to get this resolved. But before we go there, have they tried using the password reset option on the entry form?
  • Hello, I received a lot of e-mails about this from users last weekend. The password reset function resolved their login difficulty. I got more reports from users today that they received the red message "Sorry, no account could be found related to the email/username and password you entered." I don't have additional info at this time about browsers/OS/etc, but if there's other info you would find useful I'll try to obtain it from them.
  • Yes as c. said the users resolved their problem by resetting their password, but the problem did not seem to lie with them forgetting it. The system did, and not just for one or two users.
  • We'll keep an eye on this, but in my experience it is almost always users entering in the wrong password. I sign in to a lot of our forums every day and have never encountered this problem.

Passwords are case-sensitive and so must be entered exactly. We can't tell what the passwords are supposed to be because we encrypt them on our end for security so it's difficult to compare what the user entered with the actual password.
  • I tried this morning to login with the ID "chameleon", on Safari for iPhone, and it was on the default mobile theme, using password authentication. I used the correct password, but after signing in I got a "Permission Error". Strangely enough, after I reloaded the forum it showed that I had in fact been signed in.
Using the normal (desktop) theme, the error did not materialize and I was able to sign in normally.

  • Could you tell me what the URL in the browser address bar is when you get the permission error?

"REQUEST TO CHANGE PASSWORD DOES NOT WORK"

The following users have tried to reset their password, but did not receive the appropriate message that was supposed to be sent to their registered email addresses.
I have checked that their mailboxes are active and don't bounce.
I have a suspicion the Request to Change Password form may not be working properly.

    1. username : Ryan_putra
    Browser : Mozilla Firefox
    OS : Mac OS X (version 10.6.6)

    2. username : brcclc
Browser / OS : unclear, but using a PC

    3. username: naughty_dog

    4. username: chameleon
    Browser : Safari
    OS : iPhone
Comment : the form on mobile theme did not proceed after I clicked Next, kept trying to load.
HOWEVER, when I tried this form on PC and IE9 just now it worked.

    "NO ACCOUNT FOUND"
The following users reported they have been getting the "Sorry, no account could be found related to the email/username and password you entered." message

Browser: Opera Mini 6.5 for Android

Comment: this user also reported that the reset password command "did not work".
  • Update : I was able to resolve the pages-not-loading problem on my iPhone Safari (username: chameleon) by clearing all cookies and cache. I will suggest users to do so too.

We found a bug preventing login in some cases in IE7. The fix for this is scheduled to be released tomorrow.

I'll continue to investigate the reset password-related reports. When you say the password reset "did not work" could you elaborate? Is there no confirmations message, or is the email simply not arriving? If they get a confirmation message on the webpage but no email comes, it could be the email is being marked as spam. This is a common problem for any web app.

For those users, the password reset email is not arriving despite having clicked the request button.

Hello, I am still receiving complaints in of passwords not being accepted. There has been a lot of this recently. Some are long-time members who have been using the same password for years only to get error messages recently, so I am inclined to believe this may be a system issue.
Some have told me discreetly the passwords that they use. Would it be useful if I give you their ID and passwords so you can check what the problem might be?
  • Sure, email me a few of them to lincoln@vanillaforums.com if you don't mind. Also, PLEASE double-check that they have not yet reset their password.
  • OK - i will.
  • I have to admit I'm not getting anywhere tracking down what might've happened. Passwords are of course hashed in the database, so I can't lookup what password is currently stored there - either it matches or it doesn't. That makes troubleshooting this really difficult and it seems to be limited to a small set of users, not an ongoing bug.

If users are unable to reset their password, you can manually reset it for them by going to their profile and clicking "Edit Account".
