Support Developer (PHP, MySQL)

Vanilla helps organizations build unique online communities that are used by millions of people each month. What we do makes the internet more diverse, more useful and more fun.

We are looking for a talented and creative Support Developer to join our Support team and help us improve our issue resolution workflow and efficiency.

As a Support Developer, your primary responsibility is to be a great communicator. You will work with many teams to identify, prioritize, and triage issues found in our product. This is highly technical work to determine root causes, write detailed issues, and collaborate on patches and code review; but it is also highly social work. Translating the “how and why” of issues for non-developers, and conveying urgency and impact to your fellow developers are a big part of this job.

We’re a highly collaborative team of people that love what we do. Our open plan office format encourages us to talk through solutions and brainstorm often, and we’re looking for someone that will actively participate in that kind of environment.

This is a great opportunity for a creative and hardworking individual to make an impact, in an environment that encourages learning and growth. This position is based in Montreal, Quebec.

Responsibilities:

  • Triage issues referred by Support / Customer Success Managers.
  • Triage technical product issues raised by the open source community.
  • Read PHP & Javascript code and MySQL queries to locate bugs and identify technical debt.
  • Write technical issues identifying root causes discovered and possible remedies.
  • Code & review submitted patches as appropriate.
  • Attend customer meetings to assist with troubleshooting.
  • Raise prioritized issues and opportunities for improvement to the R&D team.
  • Assist with customer-specific customization support as needed.

Skills:

  • Strong troubleshooting & prioritization skills.
  • 2+ years experience in PHP and Javascript.
  • Experience with MySQL.
  • Experience with git/GitHub or equivalents.
  • Experience using REST APIs.
  • Strong written communication skills.

Opportunities for growth:

  • Coordinating release patches.
  • Coordinating customer-specific QA efforts prior to releases.
  • Identifying QA improvements that could be made to workflow.
  • Collaborating on writing release notes for customers.
  • Improve documentation (both inline and customer-facing).
  • Work on limited feature improvements in the product.
  • Skilled work in ping pong, StarCraft, or Magic: The Gathering.
